Antarctic Facts

Antarctica is the most southerly of the worlds landmasses

The south pole is located in Antarctica

The coldest temperature ever recorded was -89.2°C. This was at Vostock Station in Antarctica.

Most of Antarctica is covered in ice which is in places 5km thick!

Around 90% of all the ice in the world is in Antarctica.

Even though Antarctica is full of snow and ice it is actually the driest place on earth- and is technically a desert!

Antarctica is a continent and is bigger than Europe.

Wildlife that live in and around Antarctica include Seals, Penguins and Whales.

The continent is surrounded by the Southern Ocean, the roughest place to sail, with high winds and huge waves.

Antarctica is the best place in the world to find meteorites because they show up against the snow and ice.

When the sea-ice forms each year Antarctica doubles in size!

If all the ice in Antarctica were to melt the worlds oceans would rise by around 60 metres!
